Why does an electric car’s range decrease in winter?
There are several reasons why an electric car’s range is shorter in winter:
- the electric car’s battery performs worse in cold temperatures
- cold air is denser and also lowers tire pressure, which increases rolling resistance and means the car needs more energy to move
- the car has to heat the cabin, which consumes a lot of energy
All of this increases energy consumption and reduces the driving range of an electric car.
